About Us
The Hokes Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 to serve the youth of the city of Compton, California and surrounding communities. The Hokes Foundation’s Youth Literacy Advancement Initiative (LAI) is a homework and mentoring center for at-risk youth focusing on the areas of literacy and "STEM". For eleven years from 2003-2014 (prior to forming HF), Johnita Hokes and Dr. Timothy Hokes hosted tutoring sessions from their home, offering math, English, science, computers, and other subjects, which were age appropriate and specifically tailored to meet student needs.
Serving low-income students (ages 5-16) in general ED and “Special Needs” students (ages 9-15 I.E.P.). In addition to utilizing our newly created in-take forms, measuring the initial grades, character, and emotional stability, we will also develop measurement tools for team building skills, improved communication and more. As a result of our work, we have proven documentation that assessment test scores increased, as well as improved student GPAs, with several letters of recommendation from teachers, acknowledging student improvement. In addition, the success of our program is largely due to the involvement of dedicated parents, teachers, and volunteers.
